Hybrid Drives

Quantum has technology leadership and integration expertise derived from many years of experience with vehicle development and assembly programs, as a true Tier 1 automotive supplier. Quantum provides state-of-the-art clean propulsion technologies including powertrain engineering, system integration, advanced propulsion systems, and energy storage systems for plug-in hybrid and hybrid electric vehicles. Quantum has developed an innovative fuel efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain Q-Drive which deviates from the typical OEM hybrid drive concepts. The Q-Drive was developed to allow full vehicle performance in all-electric mode typically for 50 miles or more. For most US drivers, this allows independence from fossil fuels for the majority of the daily vehicle trips. Vehicles incorporating the Q-Drive can be re-charged with grid-electricity, at fraction of the cost of hydrocarbon fuels especially if charged at off-peak hours.

The Q-Drive incorporates a number of innovations in energy storage, electric drive architecture and control strategies. A key benefit of the Q-Drive is that when the vehicle weight, performance, and sizing of the battery have been determined, an automotive OEM has the ability to customize it for their specific platform. The Q-Drive will be commercially introduced in the Fisker Karma a 4-door sports sedan . built by Fisker Automotive, a green American premium car company that was co-founded by Quantum and the world-renowned auto-designer, Mr. Henrik Fisker. The Q-Drive for Karma makes optimum use of a large Lithium Ion battery which combines advanced automotive safety features with efficiency and is capable of delivering a peak power of 200 kW (500 Amps at 400 Volts) throughout the charge depleting range of operation. Fisker Karma utilizes a 2-liter direct injected turbo-charged 4 cylinder gasoline engine developing 191 kW (260 hp), which enables a continuous top speed of 125 mph and 0-60 of 5.8 seconds. Two powerful electric motors deliver a combined 300 kW (408 hp) and a peak torque of 1300 Nm (959 ft-lbs) of torque to the input of the differential. Quantum's proprietary controls software is loaded into a high capacity vehicle control unit to handle real time control of multiple powertrain systems including regenerative braking with ABS communication, stability/traction control, engine/generator power delivery, traction motor/propulsion system, vehicle auxiliary systems and control inputs, power management between battery and on-board power generation and on-board diagnostics functionality. The Q-Drive in Fisker Karma is complemented by a solar photovoltaic roof module that generates renewable electricity, for further reduction in CO2 emissions and improvement in fuel economy. The solar roof module was designed by Quantum and Quantum's partner Asola . Advanced and Automotive Solar Systems GmbH, and is comprised of 4 electrically separate zones, each consisting of 20 crystalline silicon cells in series.
